IGHHA is built on community, development, and shared responsibility, and parents play a huge role in creating the kind of environment where kids can thrive. What Our Values Mean for Families
At IGHHA, we want every child to develop a lifelong love of hockey. The handbook describes our mission as instilling “fair play, sportsmanship, and the development of personal and social skills,” and those ideas shape how we coach, how we communicate, and how we show up for one another.
Parents are part of that culture. When we talk about sportsmanship, respect, integrity, enjoyment, loyalty, and teamwork, we’re talking about the environment we build together in the stands, in the lobby, and at home after a tough game.
Volunteer Commitment for Families
IGHHA relies on parent volunteers to make the season possible. Tournaments, concessions, fundraising, and clinics all depend on families pitching in. The volunteer policy is clear that volunteering “should not be considered optional,” because it directly supports player development, equipment quality, and the overall health of the association.
This structure helps us keep fees reasonable and programs strong.
How Parents Support the Player Experience
The Parent Code of Conduct gives us a shared foundation for how we show up for our kids and for each other. At its heart, it’s about keeping hockey fun, modeling the kind of behavior we want our players to learn, and helping create an environment where every child feels supported.
Parents play a huge role in shaping that experience. Encouraging your child’s enjoyment of the sport, celebrating effort, and remembering that kids learn best by example all go a long way. It also means staying calm and respectful during games, supporting coaches even when you disagree with a call, and helping your child understand both the rules and the spirit of the game.
There are also a few practical responsibilities that help the season run smoothly:
- Respecting locker room boundaries and team rules
- Managing transportation and financial commitments
- Supporting coaches and officials
- Pitching in with volunteer duties
- Being the example you want your child to follow
